Scholarships & Financial Assistance
NSEA Swim has a mission to increase diversity in the sport of swimming. In order to do this, NSEA Swim has a limited number of full and partial scholarships. For more information about the scholarship process, please email scholarship@nseaswim.com.

Sea Devil Scholarship
NSEA Swim Inc. (“NSEA”) offers full and partial scholarships to qualifying families in order to allow athletes to join the NSEA competitive swim team. Scholarships are awarded to athletes wishing to compete in the sport of swimming who due to their financial circumstances would not otherwise be able to do so. Any athlete eligible to compete / participate as a member of NSEA residing in the Tri-County area (New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick) is eligible to apply for a full or partial scholarship.
Award Period
Scholarships are available at the time a parent or guardian (“Account”) submits registration information on behalf of athlete(s) with NSEA. The scholarship will remain in effect as long as the athlete remains a part of the competitive swim team, and ends at the completion of the swim season that the athlete is currently registered.
Scholarships are renewable on an annual basis so long as the swimmer continues to meet the listed criteria, and submits a new request as part of their annual team registration.
Full scholarship
Families must meet one of the following:
- Total household income at or below 150% of the current federal poverty level
- Athlete qualifies for Medicaid through the NC State Health Program
- Member family qualifies for Food Stamp Assistance Program
Benefits of full scholarship
- Annual team registration
- Team Dues
- Up to $300 annually for Fees required for the entry of swim meets to include:
- Individual and Relay Event Fees
- Facility / Host Team Surcharges
- LSC Travel Fee
- Assessed NSEA Meet Fees
- Fees required for the entry of designated LSC & Above Championships Meets
- Championship fees are NOT subject to the total value restriction
- Championship fees do include application fees for Local Swimming Committee (LSC) sponsored camps or teams (ie IMX, Zone Team, etc)
- Required uniforms and practice equipment
- Including two pieces of NSEASwim championship meet gear, when applicable
- Does NOT include technical racing suits
- A stipend for team merchandise up to $50
Should an athlete’s expenses, excluding championship fees, exceed the value of the scholarship, the Member family may request additional funding from the scholarship committee.
Partial Scholarship
NSEA may offer partial scholarships to cover the cost of group fees (as defined in the NSEA competitive swim team financial contract) as follows:
Families with a total household income (including all income received by any member of the household) equal to or below the amounts shown in the table below will receive a reduction on group fees as follows:
- At or below 185% 75% reduction in group fees
- At or below 200% 50% reduction in group fees
- At or below 225% 25% reduction in group fees

**Note - The cost reduction applies to group fees ONLY and does not apply to additional fees such as registration, meet fees, equipment costs, etc.
Documentation
All families receiving an NSEA Scholarship under the aforementioned criteria are required to annually submit proof of eligibility as follows:
- Any family meeting the income eligibility criteria:
- Copy of most recent year Tax Return (Form 1040) pages 1 and 2. (please redact social security numbers prior to submission)
- Copy of most recent year Form W-2 or Form 1099 (if tax returns are not available)
- Copy of the athletes Medicaid card (or other proof of eligibility from NC State Health program
- Copy of Member families eligibility in Federal Food Stamp Assistance Program
Any family requesting additional or other assistance who does not meet the above criteria may submit a request in writing to be reviewed by the current NSEA scholarship committee.
Financial Assistance
Children who progress through the swim lesson program and qualify to try out for the NSEA Swim Sea Devils competitive team can apply for financial aid to assist them in paying for the costs of swimming year-round. Children aged 5 - 18 as of September 1, 2023, can apply for financial aid. Families will receive reduced costs for swim suits, team gear, coaching fees, and travel meet costs through this type of assistance.
