Understanding IMX & IMR

A quick FAQ for anyone new to club swimming — what these programs are, which events count, and how scoring works.

?

What are IMX and IMR?

They're two related USA Swimming programs that challenge swimmers to be well-rounded across all four strokes and a range of distances, rather than specializing early. Swim a required set of events over a season, and you get a score — plus a ranking against swimmers your age all across the country.

?

What's the difference between the two?

IM Ready (IMR) is the entry point, built around shorter distances for swimmers who aren't quite ready to take on longer events. IM Xtreme (IMX) is the next step up, using longer distances. You do not have to complete IMR first — a swimmer can jump straight into IMX if they're ready for it. Think of IMR as a stepping stone, not a prerequisite.

?

What events does my swimmer need to complete?

It depends on age and program. All events must be swum in the same course(either short course yards or long course meters) within a single season to count toward a score in that course.

?

Does my swimmer need to swim all these events at one meet?

No. The events just need to be completed at official, sanctioned meets sometime within the same season. A score is only calculated once every required event for that age group has been swum at least once.

?

What counts as a "season" for this?

Sept 1 – Aug 31

Both the short course and long course seasons run September 1 through August 31 for IMX/IMR purposes — so it's a full-year window, not tied to your regular team's practice calendar.

?

How is the score calculated?

Each swim earns a power points value — a system USA Swimming uses to compare a time against national benchmarks for that age, sex, and event. The points from each required event are added together to produce the overall IMX or IMR score. Faster, more consistent swims across all the required events add up to a higher total.

?

Where can we see our swimmer's score and ranking?

Once every required event has been swum, log in to your USA Swimming (Deck Pass) account to see the score along with national, zone, LSC, and club rankings for IMX. Ask your coach if you need help finding it.

?

Why does our club care about this program?

Beyond individual motivation, IMX participation feeds into USA Swimming's club recognition programs (Bronze/Silver/Gold Medal Club designations), so strong team-wide participation is something we track and celebrate.

?

My swimmer only swims one or two strokes competitively — is IMX still worth doing?

Yes — that's really the point. IMX/IMR is designed to encourage development across strokes and distances that pay off long-term, even for swimmers who specialize later. Plenty of swimmers find an unexpected strength in an event they wouldn't have raced otherwise.
